Water contributes sixty percent of our total body weight and is involved in many chemical reactions. Dehydration occurs when our bodies do not have enough water to function correctly. Hot weather causes us to sweat to cool down, which can result in losing all of our body's water. Symptoms of dehydration include fatigue, headache, hunger, fainting, decreased production of dark urine, and a dry mouth.
However, you may be surprised that dehydration can cause side effects.
Bad breathing
Saliva contains antibacterial agents. When you are dehydrated, you produce less saliva, which usually kills bacteria that cause mouth odors. Along with the smells, you might find that your mouth has an unpleasant taste.
The Skin Tenting
Dehydrated skin loses flexibility and will not hit back when pulled away. When you pull some skin from your forearm or hand to form a covering, if you are adequately hydrated, it should fall right back into position. If you're dehydrated, it could stay tented and take longer to return to its initial position.
Muscle cramps
Cramps occur when electrolyte (sodium/potassium) regulates become unstable. This can be triggered by excessive sweating in summer or vomiting throughout an illness. While water is usually enough to rehydrate, if you have cramps in your muscles, it may be beneficial to consume an electrolyte beverage.
Food cravings
Dehydration may make it difficult for the body to supply glucose to its cells. The liver's function uses water to supply glycogen, which is subsequently broken down into glucose. This can result in cravings for sweet or carbohydrate-rich foods to restore glucose levels.
Brain fog
Dehydration causes blood pressure to fall, resulting in less blood supply to the brain's cerebral cortex. When we encounter brain fog, we usually turn to caffeine, but this may worsen it because caffeine is an effective diuretic and can lead to deteriorating dehydration. Depression and anxiety may further exacerbate because dehydration reduces blood flow to the brain, decreasing brain function.
Constipation
Bowel movements require a sufficient amount of water. When you are dehydrated, the human body draws water from your intestines. Dehydration in the gastrointestinal tract can also cause indigestion and bloating.
Allergies and symptoms of asthma worsen When your body becomes dehydrated. For instance, levels of histamine may rise. A rise in histamine levels causes symptoms related to allergies. In some cases, symptoms of allergy lead to asthma.
Consult a primary care doctor if you have concerns about dehydration. Dehydration is one of the most significant health concerns that should be considered properly. Contact your nearest medical facility to assess the severity of your dehydration and receive the appropriate medical care.
