The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means "to yoke" or "to unite." This word embeds within itself the essence of yoga: unification or union of the body, mind, and spirit. Thus, yoga is a practice consisting of more than what many think: postures; breath control; meditation; and proper ethical ways of living. Each of these components deals with a specific aspect of the growth and healing process of the individual.
Practised from ancient times, yoga is said to be a boon that has transformative potential in every individual's life. The following paper describes how yoga fosters physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
One of the most immediate benefits of yoga has to do with its effects on physical health. It increases flexibility, strength, and balance with regular practice. Several studies show that yoga dramatically improves muscle tone and posture-two vital factors in physical health. It is also used as a popular complementary or alternative therapy for chronic pain disorders like back pain and arthritis because it develops greater awareness of the body and promotes correct alignment.
